August 15, 2023. Officials from the Legislative Assembly and the general public had the opportunity to learn more about CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) and the vibrant Turrialba community during the fair "Turrialba and Jiménez: 120 years of being a canton," which took place in the Congress building in San José, Costa Rica.
CATIE participated with a booth, alongside various producers from the Turrialba community, showcasing different entrepreneurial ventures and local products.
Rosaura Méndez, deputy from Turrialba, shared her enthusiasm for bringing a sample of what the Turrialba canton has to offer to the capital city center. "Turrialba residents can't imagine ourselves without CATIE. CATIE has been a helping hand that has given life to our canton. Thank you for supporting the development of our canton," Méndez affirmed.
The fair not only celebrated the 120 years of being a canton for Turrialba and Jiménez but also commemorated the 50th anniversary of CATIE and the 50 years since the declaration of the Guayabo archaeological site as a National Monument.
Alejandro Pacheco, deputy for Turrialba from the Unidad Social Cristiana party, highlighted the tourist attractions and entrepreneurial ventures of the canton, thanking everyone for their presence and participation in the fair.
Muhammad Ibrahim, General Director of CATIE, emphasized the organization's coexistence with Turrialba and its continuous commitment to providing employment to the region's inhabitants. Furthermore, he underscored that Turrialba has become an educational tourism destination through CATIE.
As a final touch, Ibrahim expressed his satisfaction in receiving the deputies in Turrialba during the same week, as on August 17th, for the first time in history, the Legislative Assembly will convene in the canton, specifically in the Former Directors' Hall of the Henry A. Wallace Building at CATIE.
The fair served as a poignant reflection of the rich history and culture of Turrialba and Jiménez, highlighting CATIE's influence and ongoing support in the development and enrichment of the canton.
