Fifth GANEMOS promotion begins with innovative approaches and practical tolos
- Latin America and the Caribbean's first virtual master's program in sustainable agribusiness equips professionals to address food needs with an integrative vision.
October 2, 2023. A total of 27 students from 12 countries embarked on the executive master's program in Sustainable Agribusiness and Market Management (GANEMOS) offered by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) in September. Notably, this year's participants are young adults representing the new generation, reflecting a growing interest in managing businesses with a more sustainable approach.
Adriana Escobedo is the program coordinator and an expert in agribusiness from the Environmental Economics and Sustainable Agribusiness Unit (UEAAS/EfD) at CATIE. She pointed out that the aim of the program is to provide integrated approaches and practical tools that professionals can apply immediately after completing each course.
"At the end of the master's, it is expected that they will have a wide range of tools enabling them to manage agribusiness transformation processes with a genuinely sustainability-oriented vision, along with a significant component of local economic development," stated Escobedo.
Diversity in a unique master's program
GANEMOS is one of the first master's programs in Latin America and the Caribbean to be delivered under a sustainable framework and in a virtual format, opening up opportunities for individuals from around the world to join and complete its 12-course curriculum, including the Final Graduation Project that concludes the training process.
As a result, students from countries such as Vietnam, Angola, and the United States have joined the group of professionals acquiring competencies through this postgraduate program.
Anthony Gamboa graduated in 2022 from the second GANEMOS promotion, achieving the highest average among a group of over 30 individuals.
Gamboa emphasized the excellent interaction between instructors and students, as well as among the group of learners. He also noted that through the courses, he has been able to apply the knowledge in his professional duties.
"In my case, what I have learned has been valuable in various projects and consultancies where I contribute to improving the organizational, business, and financial management of different segments of society, such as cooperatives, producer associations, technicians, and specialists linked to the agricultural sector, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, among others," mentioned Gamboa.
This year, students hail from Angola, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and Peru. Of these, 15 are male and 12 are female, with over 70% employed in the private sector.
