Representative of CATIE in Honduras presents agroforestry solutions against air pollution
- In particular, he referred to the Quesungual Agroforestry System (SAQ), where he worked as a researcher in southern Lempira, Honduras.
Edwin García, the CATIE representative in Honduras, has been actively involved this week in various television and journalistic spaces in his country, addressing the crisis generated by air pollution affecting several cities, which exceed the levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
This issue, attributed to a combination of forest fires, haze, and high temperatures, has caught the attention of the public.
In an interview on the national television program TSI, Foro 30/30, with journalist Edgardo Melgar,, García emphasized the importance of agroforestry systems as a viable solution to this challenge, as well as their contribution to the provision of other ecosystem services. In particular, he referred to the Quesungual Agroforestry System (SAQ), where he worked as a researcher in southern Lempira, Honduras.
The SAQ, based on principles of no burning for planting, natural tree regeneration care, pruning management, and soil coverage, has proven effective in restoring the ecosystem in the mentioned region.
These principles are adaptable and replicable in other areas and sectors, which has been the subject of work by CATIE and its national partners for several years, including initiatives related to sustainable livestock farming and carbon emission reduction.
Check out the information on this topic here, where CATIE was a reference point for these interviews, thanks to the work of our representative in Honduras.
