Latin American agroforestry systems featured in international publication

- The scientific journal Agroforestry Systems published a special edition with examples of agroforestry systems in the region.
With the aim of raising awareness of agroforestry practices and systems implemented in Latin America, the scientific journal Agroforestry Systems published in its June issue a special collection dedicated to this region.
Among the topics covered in the publication are silvopastoral systems, soil quality, biodiversity, tree growth, as well as education and adoption of agroforestry systems. This issue features publications from places such as Mexico, the Amazon, the Andes, Uruguay and Argentina, among others.
Dr. Arlene López-Sampson, researcher at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), participates in this issue as guest editor, and joins the team of associate editors of the journal.
Regarding the importance of raising awareness of agroforestry practices in Latin America, López-Sampson commented that “it represents an opportunity to accelerate the adoption of agroforestry systems (AFS) in the region by providing evidence of their value in providing solutions to the global challenges facing the agrifood system.

Agroforestry Systems is an international scientific journal that publishes the results of high-impact original research, critical reviews and short communications on different aspects of agroforestry, with both biophysical and socioeconomic approaches. It highlights contents that demonstrate the role of agroforestry systems in providing basic and non-basic benefits, such as ecosystem services.
Agroforestry is a land use system that deliberately combines woody perennial plants (trees, shrubs, palms or bamboos) with agricultural crops and/or animals on the same plot.
One of the objectives of the journal Agroforestry Systems is to provide content that is relevant to broader contexts than the actual locations where the studies are conducted. In addition, they should provide new perspectives or make a significant contribution to the knowledge base in agroforestry.
