Evaluation of the 2024 Fire Season in Trifinio Promotes New Management Strategies
- Plan Trifinio and the Resilient and Biodiverse Landscapes of Northern Mesoamerica Project organized a workshop with key stakeholders to implement the After-Action Review (AAR) methodology.
On September 27, a workshop was held in the Trifinio region, Guatemala, with key stakeholders to evaluate the 2024 forest fire season. The workshop was organized by Plan Trifinio and the Resilient and Biodiverse Landscapes of Northern Mesoamerica Project, funded by the UK’s Biodiverse Landscapes Fund, and implemented by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center).
The workshop used the After-Action Review (AAR) methodology with the goal of strengthening management strategies and actions for the prevention, control, liquidation, and mitigation of forest fires in the region, allowing for a detailed review of the actions taken during the 2024 fire season.
The event served as a platform to identify areas for improvement in prevention and control responses and decision-making towards more sustainable environmental management.
The implementation of the AAR methodology allowed participants to analyze the challenges faced, lessons learned, and opportunities for innovation in fire management.
“We are here at this workshop to define actions for a strategic plan to control the 2024-2025 fire season, aiming for a more operational plan that will have a greater impact in the Trifinio territory,” said William Espina, Technical Director of Plan Trifinio, Guatemala.
The results of this exercise will contribute to the development of new strategies for the next season, focusing on improving local capacities and coordination among institutions operating in the region. Additionally, the AAR methodology will allow for more informed decision-making and more efficient use of resources, positively impacting the resilience of landscapes and biodiversity conservation in Trifinio.
