Graduate Students Invite to Sports Tournament

- The initiative's objective is also to raise funds for organizing trips or tours for the promotion, including the entire CATIE family, and to promote cultural exchange.
July 28, 2023.. The Student Council of the Graduate School invites the entire CATIE community (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) to participate in a sports event that will take place next Saturday, August 5th.
It's the CATIE Family Integration Tournament, an internal championship for soccer and volleyball, both male, female, and mixed teams. The activities will begin at 9 in the morning and extend past noon on the field in front of the main Henry A. Wallace building.
Guido Chaparro, a student and sports representative, invited the CATIE community to come and join the first-year master's students, as they are eager and excited about this first gathering.
"This tournament was a big tradition in previous years before the pandemic. It was resumed last year, and now that we are a new council, we find it important to maintain these integration and community outreach traditions," said Chaparro.
He added that the objective of the initiative is also to raise funds for organizing trips or tours for the promotion, to include the entire CATIE family, promote cultural exchange, and get to know each other even better.
Mireya Rodríguez, a student from Honduras and cultural delegate of the new student council, mentioned that this is one of the first initiatives of the student group to make themselves heard and be present in CATIE and Turrialba's social life.
"The activities will start at 9 in the morning with several sessions of soccer and volleyball matches, both male and female. My fellow students will also have food. They are very excited because they want to share 'part of their culture and gastronomic richness'," said Rodríguez.
Dany Arbey Benavides, also a member of the student council, stated that they recently met with Muhammad Ibrahim, CATIE's general director, to offer the current Student Council's services, reach some agreements, and soon present proposals for the management they want to carry out during this year. "Initially, we want to organize some events, actively participate in the community, and see how we can further connect with CATIE," concluded Benavides.
