CATIE Inaugurates Its Swimming Pool at the International Club

- A renovated space for recreation and the well-being of the institutional and Turrialba community
The CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) enthusiastically celebrated the inauguration of its renovated swimming pool at the International Club on February 28, 2025, in an event that brought together authorities, athletes, and community members in an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy.

The ceremony began with remarks from CATIE's Director General, Dr. Luis Ernesto Pocasangre, who highlighted the importance of this new space for the well-being and recreation of both the institution's members and the Turrialba community. Additionally, Johnny Chang, representative of General Services, explained the pool’s operation and usage regulations, noting that it will be open to the public under a membership system with affordable fees.

The formal event was led by CATIE’s Director General, accompanied by Melvin Solano and Ligia Kawas, Turrialba residents living on campus; Esteban Camacho, Director of the Inter-American Scientific School and College (CIC-CATIE); and Ariana Coto, a Paralympic athlete from Costa Rica, who had the honor of performing the first swimming demonstration in the 100-meter freestyle category. Subsequently, three students from the Inter-American Scientific School and College gave a second exhibition in the pool.
Following the inauguration, the pool was officially opened to all attendees, who were able to enjoy its modern facilities. The event concluded with music and a space for socializing, reaffirming CATIE's commitment to developing inclusive and healthy recreational spaces.


Swimming Pool Hours and Fees
The pool will be available during the following hours:
- Tuesday to Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Monday Closed
Regarding fees, CATIE employees will have access to the pool with a monthly fee ranging from $20 to $45, depending on their salary range. CATIE residents will pay $50 per family unit (first-degree consanguinity), while retired CATIE staff members will have a $30 membership fee (first-degree consanguinity). External members can join with a $75 fee for up to three people. Additionally, CATIE Graduate School students will have special access for $10 per month, and general use of the pool will cost ₡4,000 per person.
