CATIE makes diploma on calculation of emissions reduction for the forestry sector and land use change
- The diploma was given in Nicaragua in preparation for the strategy to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (ENDE-REDD+)
In September, CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) initiated a diploma course that addresses the conceptual bases, methodologies and uses of tools for carbon monitoring in the context of REDD+.
According to Norvin Sepúlveda, CATIE representative in Nicaragua, the main objective of the diploma course is to provide technical-specialized assistance to the institutions that are part of the Measuring, Reporting and Verification Table (MRV), which promote the strategy to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (ENDE-REDD+).
"We want these institutions to have the capacity to develop their MRV system for REDD+, as well as the monitoring of goods and services other than ecosystem carbon, and to be useful for national greenhouse gas reporting," Sepulveda said.
Officials from the National Forestry Institute (INAFOR, its Spanish acronym), the Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA, its Spanish acronym), the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INTER, its Spanish acronym), the Secretariant of the Caribbean Coast (SDCC, its Spanish acronym), the Secretariat of Natural Resources of the Northern Caribbean Autonomous Regional Government (SERENA-GRACCN, its Spanish acronym), the Management of Technology and Information Corporation (GTI S.A), MARENA/ENDE-REDD projects, among others.
Indiana Fuentes, co-director of INAFOR, underscored the commitments and actions being taken to reduce emissions, and noted the relevance of indigenous territorial governments participating.
This diploma course, which will end in the second week of December, is taught by Mario Chacón, researcher of the Program on Forests, Biodiversity and Climate Change of CATIE and Juan Carlos Leyva, CATIE consultant, along with national experts from ENDE-REDD+.
