Researchers, technicians and producers from Jalisco learn methodologies to estimate greenhouse gases in cattle ranches
- They participated in a workshop held by the BioPaSOS project in that Mexican state
March 4, 2020 In order to promote sustainable and low-emission livestock farming, the project Biodiversity and Sustainable Agro-silvo-pastoral Landscapes, known as BioPaSOS, which is implemented by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), shared with technicians and producers from Autlán, Jalisco, in Mexico, methodologies for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock farms.
The methodologies were shared during a workshop held on February 27 and 28, at the headquarters of the Centro Universitario de la Costa Sur (CUCSUR) of the University of Guadalajara (UDG, its Spanish acronym), and allowed participants to learn about the tools that are currently used to estimate GHG, as well as to learn how to gather relevant information to be used in GHG estimation calculations for the different emission sources present in cattle ranches."Livestock plays a very important role as a GHG emitter. In this sense, the BioPaSOS project promotes actions to reduce these emissions in cattle ranches and with that contribute to environmental commitments made by the government of Mexico to the National Strategy for Climate Change (ENCC, its Spanish acronym) and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The goal is to achieve a 22% reduction in total GHG emissions and avoid deforestation by 2030," said Andrés Vega, researcher for the BioPaSOS project at CATIE.
Rafael de Jesús Llamas, technician from the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (SEMADET, its Spanish acronym) of Jalisco, expressed his experience after participating in the workshop, indicating that it is important for technicians to have this type of training because it is useful for their intervention work. "With these tools that we learned, we can better advise the producers and even give us a new perspective of what we are working on and the benefits we can obtain by putting them into practice," said Yama.
According to Vega, knowing how to estimate GHG emissions will allow the livestock sector to provide reliable data on the current performance of their production systems, demonstrating the environmental responsibility of the sector and identifying the livestock producers where there are opportunities for improvement regarding the conservation of their production systems and to contribute to the reduction of emissions associated with livestock.
The BioPaSOS project is supported by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), in coordination with the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO, its Spanish acronym) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER, its Spanish acronym), with funding from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and together with multiple local partners in their intervention territories.
