Monitoring greenhouse gas emissions on cattle ranches in Chiapas, Mexico
- Monitoring on sustainable cattle ranches versus conventional cattle ranches makes it possible to determine exactly how silvo-pastoral, agro-forestry and other good livestock practices are contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
July 29, 2020. As part of the research agenda of the project Biodiversity and Sustainable Agro-silvopastoral Landscapes, known as BioPaSOS, and implemented by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), in which the Autonomous University of Chiapas (UNACH, its Spanish acronym), the University of Science and Arts of Chiapas (UNICACH, its Spanish acronym) participate, El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) and the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP, its Spanish acronym), are monitoring the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) in 80 cattle ranches in Chiapas, Mexico, with different interventions of silvo-pastoral practices and good livestock practices.
GHG estimates are being carried out on cattle ranches within the La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve (REBISE) and aim to demonstrate with precise and local data how the intervention of silvo-pastoral, agro-forestry and other good cattle-raising practices contribute to reducing GHG emissions.
Of the 80 ranches monitored, 40 implement sustainable practices and the remaining 40 ranches do not.
The monitoring is being carried out by students of the Agronomic Engineering in Environmental Livestock of the UNACH, with the support of the technical staff of the BioPaSOS project and under the supervision of members of the sustainable livestock research agenda of the state of Chiapas.
"The objective is to accurately determine GHG emissions in general and by type of gas (methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide), which are the main sources of emissions and thus be able to determine what strategies should be promoted and implemented to mitigate the emission of these gases in cattle ranches," said José Antonio Jiménez, local coordinator of the BioPaSOS project in Chiapas.
According to Jiménez, this research strengthens the collaborative work that has been carried out as part of the research agenda of the BioPaSOS project, in which different academic and research institutions in Chiapas participate. In addition, it will provide inputs for the sustainable livestock advisory board that was established together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (SAGyP, its Spanish acronym).The BioPaSOS project is being implemented with the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), in coordination with the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO, its Spanish acronym) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER, its Spanish acronym), with funding from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and with multiple local partners in their areas of intervention.
