Good livestock farming practices in harmony with the Amazon region

  • With a total of 7700 livestock producers, livestock farming is an important economic activity in the Amazonian regions of Huanuco and Ucayali.

May 27, 2021. Specialists and experts from public and private institutions linked to the livestock production chain in the departments of Huánuco and Ucayali, in Peru, analyzed the adoption of technologies and best practices in livestock farms located in this area.

The exchange workshop was held as part of the joint work between CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) and the Sustainable Productive Landscapes in the Peruvian Amazon (PPS, its Spanish acronym) project, an initiative led by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM, its Spanish acronym), the technical cooperation of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The objective was to jointly identify which practices and technologies are ideal for producers to improve their productivity without affecting the forests.

It was also key to analyze the factors that enable or inhibit the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices in the livestock sector in Huánuco and Ucayali. To this end, participatory work sessions were held to propose technologies that contribute to the sustainable intensification of livestock farming in harmony with nature.

The most frequent technologies are improved pastures, rational pasture management, sanitary management and deworming. The technologies and good practices with less frequency on the farms are electric fences, artificial insemination, milking parlor improvement, fattening animal husbandry, cut pastures, log management and silvo-pastoral systems.

The main limitations to adoption were the lack of promotion and demonstration of sustainable practices or technologies, the deficit in the provision of technical assistance, the lack of incentives and the low financial capacity of the farmer.

Miguel Vásquez, director of the Pucallpa Agricultural Experiment Station of the National Institute for Agrarian Innovation (INIA, its Spanish acronym), said that the workshop facilitated the meeting of experts involved in cattle farming, allowing the exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as discussing the key factors that have facilitated or limited the adoption of technologies and good practices on the farms of small and medium cattle farmers.

It is estimated that around 7700 livestock producers in Huánuco and Ucayali manage the dual-purpose, milk and meat production system and, according to the specialists and experts who participated in the workshop, many of them carry out practices that could be improved and made more sustainable from an environmental point of view.

This exercise seeks to contribute to the Amazonian livestock sector in Huanuco and Ucayali, aligning the sustainable development approach promoted by the PPS with the closing of gaps in relation to the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies by livestock families.

The results and conclusions will be systematized in a document that presents the current state of technology adoption and includes the most relevant aspects and guidelines to reduce the barriers that prevent the adoption of good production practices.
