Our Graduate Program is highly prestigious and recognized internationally for its quality.

CATIE is an international center and university whose core functions are education, research, innovation for development and technical cooperation in agriculture, natural resources and the environment. The institution works through strategic alliances with producers, organizations, partners, public and private institutions, universities, municipalities, donors and cooperators at the local, national and international level.

The international recognition of its graduate education program is based on its quality, experience, teaching what it does with multiple partners in the countries, sharing advances and state-of-the-art science and technology in its different fields of expertise. It is also recognized for the diversity, experience, internationality, academic, scientific and professional level of its faculty of professors, and for the wealth acquired through sharing, analyzing and discussing students’ professional experiences. These students hail from different countries of America and other continents. CATIE offers personalized interaction with each student.

The results of a study conducted as part of one of CATIE’s frequent external evaluations show that 75% of its alumni currently hold leadership positions, 90% frequently or very frequently use the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies at CATIE, over 95% would recommend CATIE’s graduate programs to others, and 81% apply the systemic, synergistic, interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches promoted at the Institution

With its graduate program, CATIE’s mission is to contribute to the development of intellectual capital in the countries comprising the Inter-American System, in order for them to make innovative scientific and technical contributions and assume leadership in the fields of agricultural and livestock sciences, natural resources, local and rural development, the environment and other related areas.

Graduate studies are conceived and structured to offer professionals holding university degrees, the skills, capacities, theoretical and practical knowledge, and the abilities, attitudes and values necessary for qualitative and quantitative technical and scientific research for higher education and for development. Likewise, CATIE promotes managerial capacity and the climate smart territory approach in agricultural production systems, natural resource management and the environment.

The focus of the graduate program is interdisciplinary and integrated; the study plan is designed taking into account CATIE’s nearly 70 years of experience in graduate education, institutional evolution, the dynamics of agricultural and livestock, environmental, and rural development conditions at the national, regional and international level, as well as the needs of the countries in the region.

The program covers cross-cutting subjects such as climate change and climate variability, food security, territorial approaches and management, markets and value chains, ecosystem services, livelihoods, integrated water resource management, governance and institutionalism, policies and norms, organization and participation, poverty reduction and human well-being that link agriculture, natural resources, environment and development.
