About the Latin-American Chair on Environmental Decisions for Global Change (CLADA) 

Everyday, there is a more pressing urgency for society to design and implement answers in response to the impacts of global change; answers that consider multiple dimensions (environmental, socio-cultural and economic), stakeholders, and knowledge systems. For this context, there is a high demand for the use of instruments and adequate processes that help stakeholders make robust decisions –decisions that can work under different conditions in the future– not only technically, but also socially.

The Chair of Environmental Decisions for Global Change (CLADA for its Spanish acronym) combines the use of tools and theories in the science of decision-making with the technical knowledge acquired from different fields of work (e.g. water management, sustainable systems in forests and agriculture). This supports the design and implementation of the social collaboration processes that tackle land management, multi-stakeholder coordination, and the analysis of strengths and barriers of governance structures at multiple levels.

CLADA’s specific interest is in applying trans-disciplinary research to multiple levels (from local to national), integrating knowledge from different stakeholders in the search of collective solutions to the problems of environmental degradation in Latin America –currently with different experiences in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Panamá, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. At the same time, CLADA aims to shape professionals through short courses, graduate-level education, and through the participation of governmental, non-governmental, and academic partners.

It is CLADA’s objective to build and strengthen regional stakeholders’ capacities, as well as design and accompany collective processes to make robust decisions about technical solutions to face the challenges of global change –challenges that are a result of the combination of climate change with the effects of globalization– that take into account the role of ecosystems and the productive uses of the land.
